Great points.. whilst I agree that "the remaining liquidity in the market is largely illusory" and other markets are "zombie institutions" , remember that the rules can and will be changed to maintain a facade of a functional system and keep the game going. Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.

Excellent article. I agree that things are going to get bad, and I think that given what the govt is doing to our currency, one of the only ways for most people to protect and potentially prosper from this is by investing in those assets that should rise from all the money printing, such as gold and other commodities. This site also has good analysis on the gold price and the economy.

regarding gold confiscation i can only say that an underground economy will develop.....however, the antichrist will become furious and take draconian totalitarian measures to remove physical currency - both frn and gold......to be replaced by electronic currency....i would still keep and hide the gold....

regarding the exhaustion of the american consumer, unemployment, et. al. it is important to note where it is occurring....raw unemployment numbers may look bad but until it hits the top quintile hard there will only be hand waiving from politicians....also, financial results will not become dire until that quintile suffers because most disposable income comes from that group....

on the other hand, that is not to say that they are insulated or immune even in the current state - they will retrench and go into hull down defilade.....the suffering in the bottom 3 quintiles will lead to civil unrest and the obushma butcher crime syndicate has already considered that possibility through the invention out of whole cloth of the patriot act, fema, dhs, tsa, and other gestapo police forces....

it is going to get ultra ugly over the next 7 years.....

I am sure if you have followed this site for a while you will notice my comments on the role gold and silver play in protecting civil liberties.

Currently, you cannot. The criminal gangs costumed in government regalia have big guns and do not even follow their own rules as found in the United States Constitution. They treat their citizens like human livestock and harvest them for their milk (taxes) and meat (wars). It is what it is.

How can you be sure that governments would not take over Gold Money, steal the metals and leave you with nothing? Is it not possible that across the border transactions from withing the U.S. could be stopped or seized?

David,

So I have always thought, but if they also make ownership illegal, and so we have no legal market to sell to, then how does mere ownership of gold benefit us, seeing as how you can't spend it at Wal-Mart, or the gas station, or the supermarket? At that point, gold can only go into deep storage until some point in the future when hopefully it can emerge in a freer economy - but that might be 10-20 years later. The chances of showing a bookable, spendable profit on gold investments are looking slimmer than ever to me, even though it still looks like the best alternative. You have to admit, TPTB have been very effective at damping down the gains on investments in gold and related shares, and introducing enough volatility to scare many off. Now I am concerned that they are about to engineer a scenario where most of the suppressed gains accrue to the official sector and those wealthy and well connected enough to take evasive action.

Stephen, I think nothing is there from preventing a repeat of history. that is why we are advised to hold phisical bullion and not store it in a safe deposit box at a bank.

I am a gold and silver saver, but I am becoming concerned that the US government will do exactly what FDR did in 1933: buy back all large known gold stockpiles in the USA at some price, then devalue the currency by raising the price of gold. They thereby confiscate the lions share of the profits that gold investors should have reaped but didn't, due to the CRIMEX market manipulation. At the same time, they also make it illegal to buy or sell gold in the USA, or even illegal to own it - again, just as FDR did.

They would not need or want to send SWAT teams around to search up the coins held by small investors; the metal held by exchange traded funds would be the easy target, plus any large hoards held in the USA in professional storage. All could be forcibly sold to the government (confiscated, paid for with worthless fiat) simply by presidential edict. Due to the Emergency, of course. In the interests of saving the economy.

By destroying the retail market for gold and/or silver coins, they would make it impossible for investors to move down the pyramid because government would then own substantially all the gold, as happened in 1933. Then gold could only be bartered or sold on the black market - at which point, the profits accrue to the criminals operating the black market.

So, what is there to prevent government from "solving" its problems by this means??

Hi Trace,

Another great article! I agree with your conclusion but have one question: When the next crash hits us, won't the same thing happen as last year... Which was EVERYTHING getting sold - including precious metals and their shares - while the US Dollar index goes straight up?

Thanks...
